Did the olden days really stink?
Not as much as you might think.
That’s part of the message behind a do-it-yourself the old-fashioned-way perfume-making event on Sunday at Rawlins Public Library near Riggs High in Pierre.
“In a world without convenient baths and (with) bad sewers, fragrance was everywhere, from incense in temples to scented oils used to adorn the body,” says Dawson Lewis in a news release.
He’s a leader in the local chapter of “The Society for Creative Anachronisms,” an international group based in California that studies and celebrates old ways — say, before 1600 - of doing things, from making coins to fighting to making perfume.
Imagine John Belushi in a toga long before they invented Irish Spring, or even Old Spice.
Lewis is talking about really old spice.
The exact recipes aren’t readily available, but the seven members of the local Society have concocted some that use roses and myrrh - which like frankincense from the Bible story of Jesus birth is a resin and oil derived from trees - as well as using nice smelling herbs such as as marjoram and coriander, Lewis said.
These exotic mixtures came and still come from exotic places: Ethiopia and Somalia and Yemen and Indonesia, as the places are known today. Back at the time of the ancient Romans they had different names and everybody spoke in Roman numerals, like the Super Bowl used to be.
So on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 4, anyone can join the fun in the library’s community room from 2-4:30 p.m. (With plenty of time left to watch the kickoff of the Super Bowl in Minneapolis, at which one team traditionally stinks.)
“We will have all the materials and explain how to do things,” Lewis said. “I have three different blends steeping in my office at home right now.”
Everyone should bring their own small glass jar to take home their own perfume they will be able to concoct during the session.
“We will set them up with a couple ounces of olive oil and they can put their own (mixture) in.”
It’s a nice preparation for Valentine’s Day.
Everyone is welcome.
