The back story: The Macallan needs little in the way of introduction — it is one of the world’s most beloved single-malt Scotches. But there is the traditional Macallan, as in the classic 12, 18 and 25-year-old releases, and then there is what might be called the next-generation Macallan. Edition No. 3 is decidedly the latter.
As it name implies, it’s a limited-edition bottling and one of several new types of whisky that Macallan has introduced in recent years. Even more of note: It’s a bottle made in collaboration with a perfume-maker — Roja Dove, one of the most celebrated in the world. How does a Scotch brand exactly partner with a master perfumer? Macallan invited Dove to the distillery, where he sniffed his way through several whiskeys from the brand trove and described their individual characteristics from an olfactory perspective. Macallan whisky maker Bob Dalgarno then picked up on some of Dove’s thoughts to fashion a bottle.
For Macallan, the idea behind such innovation is to reach new markets — specifically, younger drinkers and women, two groups that have not always been Scotch enthusiasts. The strategy has apparently been paying off: The brand saw sales grow by 13% in 2016.
What we think about it: This is definitely not your father’s Macallan. If the traditional versions can be rich and full-bodied, Edition No. 3 is a bit more delicate, sweeter and (dare we say?) perfume-y. We can see why it might appeal to Scotch newbies. But we’re inclined to go back to our Macallan 18, one of our favorite all-time whiskeys.
How to enjoy it: The brand says to try this one neat or with a couple of drops of water. And if you want to rub a little on your skin, go for it!
