A Lancaster County woman who became so angry after her car broke down that she allegedly set it on fire in Donegal Township, Westmoreland County, was arraigned Monday on charges of arson and risking a catastrophe.
Amanda B. Silliman, 36, of Mount Joy, was ordered held in the Westmoreland County Prison by Acting District Judge Joseph Dalfonso of Monessen after failing to post $25,000 bail.
State police Trooper Adam Zinn reported in an affidavit of probable cause that he was dispatched to the parking lot of the Indiana Creek Valley Christian and Children’s Center near the Donegal interchange of the turnpike for a report of a vehicle fire just before 3 p.m. Sunday.
Zinn said he was met at the scene by Silliman, who told him her car had broken down in the parking lot.
“Silliman related that once her car broke down in the parking lot she became angry at it. Silliman stated that she took a pink T-shirt and sprayed it with body spray ... then stuffed the T-shirt in the gas tank filler neck and ignited the shirt on fire,” Zinn wrote in the affidavit.
Silliman told Zinn that “she wanted to burn the car,” the trooper said.
Zinn alleges the arson endangered firefighters from the Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Department who responded as well as the nearby Christian center, which has its own refueling station.
The 2002 Ford Taurus was destroyed, he said.
Police also recovered a suspected marijuana grinder from the scene.
Silliman is charged with two counts of arson and criminal mischief, possession of incendiary materials, risking a catastrophe, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
