The sun can play havoc with perfume on the skin.
We all have different reasons for stopping to add that spritz of perfume before leaving the house – it's a tool for seduction, can evoke happy memories or just add an extra element of individualism to the way you approach your day.
The new season doesn't just invite the opportunity to overhaul your wardrobe. With a bounty of new fragrance releases, it's also a good time to reconsider your scent.
From the bottles to the base notes, summer's best new fragrances are a celebration of the bold, but as the weather heats up, how – and where – we wear our scent needs an overhaul, too.
Coco Chanel once said that a woman should apply perfume in the areas where she would like to be kissed, but the experts generally agree that the "pulse points" are the optimal spot. These are locations on the body where the blood vessels are closest to the skin, and as these spots emanate heat, they help fragrance to travel from your skin into the air.

Experts say to apply your perfume to these points – namely, the inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind ear lobes, in the cleavage, behind knees, and the inner elbows – but as we spend longer days outdoors over the warmer months, the sun can play havoc with perfume on the skin.
Most popular fragrances contain a high percentage of alcohol, which when applied to the skin, causes photosensitivity in the area. This means that it makes the skin more sensitive when it's exposed to sunlight, resulting in accelerated burning of the skin (sunburn) and skin problems such as irritation, rashes and hyper-pigmentation.
You can often spot this most obviously on those who spray their perfume straight onto their décolleté, especially when in summer they are sporting a lower neckline.
So what's the solution for still applying your favourite fragrance over the silly season? Limit it to spots where the sun don't shine, in areas like the inner wrists and inside elbows, for starters. The backs of the knees are also a great option if you don't have your legs in the sun, and as heat rises, it amplifies the scent.
So go forth and spray – but check where, before you spritz.
