Perfume (Resurrection Records, Lolipop Records)
Call it what you will—Beach Goth, surf pop, or garage do-wop—local artist Kim Gray’s first full-length album, Perfume, eludes classification.
Better known for his work as a member of Skinny Kids, Gray’s solo record crafts a similar vibe. Fuelled by reverb-drenched guitar melodies and drawling summery vocals, Perfume’s hypnotic chords and synthesiser soundscapes create a haze of sound. Trading Skinny Kids’ blasting live drums for programmed pads, Gray’s solo offering lacks some of the band’s punch—but, by softening his beats, the artist creates a signature sound that distinguishes the record from both his previous EP, Backseat Bingo, and his work with the group.
Gray’s distinctive sound is both a blessing and a curse. Standout single “Perfume Ghost” lends an exciting muscle to Perfume, ripping a tight wah-pedalled guitar solo through the thick synth drones, while the fun and catchy “Tropical Low Life” is built on echoes that punctuate Gray’s recurrent chord sequences.
Nevertheless, Perfume’s sound palette is limited. Sticking to the same instrumentation, the analogous guitar and synth lines used in “Yesterday’s Smoke” shadow that of “Perfume Ghost” too closely, and, by over-stacking tracks like “I Wish You Knew Me Well” with synthesiser parts, Gray’s reverb-driven compositions sometimes become muddy.
But that likely won’t bother Skinny Kids and Kim Gray stalwarts. Perfectly capturing the Mac-Demarco-meets-Hockey-Dad slacker vibe, Perfume is the ideal LP to listen to as you head down to Jericho beach with a large bag of weed and a skimboard. Or, as falls rolls in, sitting inside with a huge pizza and contemplating what to watch on Netflix.
