NORWALK — A Norwalk woman who police say was stopped for driving erratically early Sunday morning attempted to mask the smell of alcohol by spraying perfume throughout her car.
Helen Andronaco, 30, of Main Street, was charged early Sunday morning with driving under the influence, failure to obey traffic signal, failure to drive in proper lane and three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.
An officer was patrolling East Avenue shortly after midnight when he observed a Jeep, reportedly being driven by Andronaco, straddling the double yellow line and nearly striking an oncoming car.
The officer activated cruiser lights in an attempt to conduct a car stop, but police say Andronaco kept driving and went through a red light before pulling over.
Police say that as the officer approached the driver’s side of the car, they noted what appeared to be a recently-sprayed fragrance and a perfume bottle on the front passenger seat. As Andronaco produced her driver’s license, police say they detected the odor of alcohol over the perfume.
According to police, Andronaco did not perform two of three field sobriety tests satistfactorily and was placed under arrest and brought to Norwalk police headquarteres.
At headquarters, police say there was a crack pipe in her purse and a marijuana pipe on her person. A police dog was brought to the car and police say they found another marijuana pipe.
Police say her blood alcohol content registered .0963 and .0869, slightly over the legal driving limit.
Her bond was set at $1,000 and she was given a court date of Oct. 23.
